Fuego 10U: NCTB Winter Championships – Champions

Fuego 10U takes 1st place at the NCTB Winter Championships at Twin Creeks Sports Complex in Sunnyvale, California, winning 10-3 in the semifinal over Swagg 10U Gold, and then run ruling the East Bay Banditos 9-1 in the Championship game.

These dudes have been playing tremendous baseball over the past few tournaments and have really been awesome to coach. Their pitching and defense shows up every game, and their ability to play small ball and long ball, makes them a tough match for any team  – Coach Mike

The Fuego 10U squad started their pool play games by facing a tough Banditos team, whom they would eventually face again in the Championship game. After being down early in the game 4-1, the boys rallied to put two consecutive 5 run innings together in the 2nd and 3rd, to take a commanding 11-5 lead. They ended up holding on for an 11-7 win. Rocco Rios, Mayson Martinez and Dylan Manago took the mound and helped contain the Banditos for the W.

In game two, the boys faced off against Swagg 10U Gold, who they would eventually see in the seminfinal game as well. The boys came out on fire, putting a 6-spot on the board in the first inning, and cruising on to a 12-3 blowout and run-rule win. The game featured a Home Run for Mayson Martinez (and a 2 hit game) and a two hit game for Vincent Mitchell. Dylan Manago and Jaxon Ash both pitched in the game and had strong outings for the team, securing the win.

On Championship Sunday, the Fuego 10’s squared up once again against the Swagg 10U Gold team in the semifinal game. After a tight few innings, the boys put crooked numbers on the board in the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings, leading to another dominant victory over the Swagg team for the 2nd day in a row. Rocco Rios started on the mound for Fuego, pitching 5 strong innings, with 9 strike outs, and allowing 3 unearned runs. Jaxon Ash came in to shut it down in the 6th, securing the win and a ticket to the championship game.

In the Championship Game, the team was set for another rematch vs the East Bay Banditos. The game started off much like the semifinal game, as the teams were tied up at 1-1 going into the 3rd inning. But the Fuego 10’s couldn’t be contained for much longer. In the bottom of the 3rd, the boys dropped a 4-spot on the Banditos, jumping out to a 5-1 lead. After adding on another run in the 4th, and 3 more in the 5th, the Fuego squad cruised on for another run-rule win with a final score of 9-1.

Fuego had strong offensive performances from much of the team, including 2 hit games from Dylan Manago, Mayson Martinez, Gage Ash and Jacob Baechler. Jaxon Ash started the game, cruising through 3 innings with 3 strike outs, giving up 1 unearned run and 1 hit. Dylan Manago came in to close the game for the final two innings, striking out the side in both of his innings of work, finishing with 6 strike outs, allowing no runs and no hits.

The strong performance by the team, both offensively and defensively, earned the Fuego 10U ball club their 1st championship of their inaugural season, and a fun and exciting weekend of baseball for everyone involved.
