Fuego 13U: Black Tie Bash Champions

Fuego 13U takes the 1st place trophy at the NCTB Black Tie Bash in Sunnyvale and Fremont, California on an exciting bracket Sunday defeating the Whalers 13U team 8-0 in the Semifinal game, and topping the Peninsula Mets 18-12 in the Championship game.

That Championship game was intense, a real slugfest… Seeing the boys step up and battle their way to victory with multiple lead changes like that – made me one proud coach. – Coach Mike

On Saturday morning, the team came out flat, and found themselves in a dogfight against the Swagger 13U Red team, winning with a final score of 7-5. Their next game against Trosky 13U Select was more of the same, winning that game 8-5.

As the number two seed going into Sunday bracket play, the team once again started off a little flat but were carried by the pitching of Marcus Martinez who went 6 innings, giving up no runs on two hits, with 6 strike outs, winning their semifinal game 8-0 on a mercy rule walk-off single by Dario Catalano.

In the championship game against the Peninsula Mets, Fuego jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the 2nd, only to give it all back in the bottom of the 2nd 6-6. After taking a 9-6 lead into the bottom of the 4th, they let that lead slip away at the end of 5 and were trailing 10-9. Fuego took back the momentum in the 6th scoring 4, to take a 13-10 lead into the bottom of the 6th, but the Mets battled back to make it 13-12 going into the 7th inning. In the top of the 7th, Fuego added 5 more runs to take a convincing 18-12 lead, but gave up a run before leaving two runners stranded on 3rd and 2nd base, winning by a final score of 18-13. Turned out to be a wild and fun ride for the teams, coaches and all the fans in the stands.
